The Iron Nun
US triathlete Sister Madonna Buder in action during the Datev Challenge Roth in Hilpoltstein, Germany. The 83 year old nun from California, whose nickname is ‘Iron Nun’, attempts to break the world record of the oldest person to complete the long-distance race. The competition consisted of 3,8 km of swimming, 180 km of cycling and 42 km of running.
Sister Madonna began training at age 48 after a priest told her that exercise was a good way to strike a balance between “mind, body, and spirit” and for the relaxation and calmness it can bring an individual. She completed her first triathlon at age 52 and first Ironman event at age 55 and has continued ever since. She has completed over 325 triathlons including 45 Ironman Distances.
During her sporting career, Sister Madonna has worked hard at also raising money for various charities. She is quoted as saying, “I train religiously.”
